2020-06-14-How Do We Know God’s Will?

Our third week meeting back together since the lock-down.
We sang songs, recited scripture and learned about will of god.

Posted below is adult bible study, children's Sunday school, some YouTube versions of the songs we sang as a congregation and finally, today's sermon/message.  We hope you are blessed.

You may notice that the sermon is a bit clearer.  Our new bluetooth microphone arrived.  Yay!

Keep Joy in Your Heart
Light Bulb Jokes...
this is an excerpt from https://gcfl.net

How many mystery writers does it take to screw in a light bulb?
Two. One to almost screw it in all the way, and the other to give it an unexpected twist at the end.

How many magicians does it take to change a light bulb?
Depends on what you want to change it into.

How many union plumbers does it take to change a light bulb?
None. Union plumbers don't change light bulbs; union electricians change light bulbs.

How many software engineers does it take to change a light bulb?
Excuse me, that's a hardware problem.

How many hardware engineers does it take to change a light bulb?
Before I answer that, is it possible to work around the problem in software?

2020-06-07-How Does One Experience God?

Our second week meeting together since the lockdown.
We sang songs, recited scripture and learned how to experience God.

Posted below is adult bible study, children's Sunday school, some YouTube versions of the songs we sang as a congregation and finally, today's sermon/message.  We hope you are blessed.

Adult Sunday School led by Albert Faust

We tried something new this week.
We had Adult Sunday School on Thursday night!

Yes, you read that correctly!  Now Sunday School is Thursday night, so I guess it's really a mid-week Bible study at least this week it is...

The feedback of those that attended was positive so we will continue in this fashion.  Everyone is welcome to join us on-line and participate.

Moving the Bible study to Thursday night allows for several advantages...

1.  This will give those that are not able to worship with us in person, a chance to reconnect with each other on-line.

2.  It will make things a little easier for Sunday morning worship time.

3.  It will also be easier to re-post the Thursday Night Bible class on-line on our website.

4.  And finally, it will give folks a "spiritual boost" mid-week. Yay!

If you are NOT part of our on-line Thursday Night Bible Study, you can take care of that now.

Two easy ways to join.  Each week will send the ZOOM link via text and email.

1.  Just text the word "Bible" on your cell phone to 323-310-9982

GREAT NEWS we reopened the church today and gathered (at a distance) for worship!  We realize that not all could join us, so we recorded the sermon and pre-recorded children's Sunday school.

Unfortunately, we do not have the adult Sunday school recorded.
We'll try to work on that for next week.

Since not everyone could come back to the church yet,
we have placed YouTube versions of the songs that we sang.

Enjoy and we hope this blesses you!

Please feel free to leave a comment below and start a conversation.

And the ransomed of the Lord will  return

And come with joyful shouting to Zion,

With everlasting joy upon their heads.

They will find gladness and joy,

And sorrow and sighing will flee away.

    Isaiah 35:10

Children's Sunday School by Mrs. Denise
    Paul in Lystra

    All right!
It was great to see those of you who came with your parents to church today!  Here is the lesson from Mrs. Denise.

    Two Songs this week.

    Take it away Mrs. Denise...

    In a Very Big Way

    Nah nah nah nah nah,
    hidey hidey hey,
God loves you in a very big way.

    Nah nah nah nah nah,
    hidey hidey hey,
God loves you in a very big way.

    When you’re afraid,
    God loves you, hidey hey!
    When you’re sad,
    in a very big way,

    When you need help,
    hidey hidey hey,
He’ll help you in a very big way.

    Nah nah nah nah nah,
    hidey hidey hey,
God loves you in a very big way.

    Nah nah nah nah nah,
    hidey hidey hey,
God loves you in a very big way.
God loves you in a very big way.

    Hear the Word of God

    Hear the word of God,
    hear the word of God,
Hear the word of God and obey it.

    Hear the word of God,
    hear the word of God,
Hear the word of God and obey it.

    Stomp your feet!
    (Hear the word of God!)
    Clap your hands!
    (Hear the word of God!)
    Turn around!
    (Hear the word of God!)

You’re all doing a very fine job.
    Now it’s time to
    hear the word of God!

    Hear the word of God,
    hear the word of God,
Hear the word of God and obey it.

    Hear the word of God,
    hear the word of God,
Hear the word of God and obey it.
Hear the word of God and obey it.
Hear the word of God and obey it.

Well, we were able to re-open the church for worship today!

Below we have shared the various songs that we sang during church time and have included Pastor Harvey's Message.

Unfortunately our church does not have the best acoustics, so we "upped" the volume in the recording, but there may be echo and feedback.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to navigate through these times. We hope to keep adding the service on-line as well as in person in the future. We hope and pray that our on-line representation blesses you also.

Waiting to Reopen in 2020-Here is What We Are Doing to Keep YOU Safe when We Return

WE WERE REOPENED FOR LIVE  WORSHIP AT HIGHLAND PARK CHRISTIAN CHURCH
HERE IS WHAT WE ARE DOING TO KEEP YOU SAFE but New COVID-19 numbers have closed us down again.

First of all a HUGE "Thank You" to all who have been supporting our church both prayerfully and financially throughout these times.

I am sorry to inform you all that we are closing our doors again.  We have done done nothing wrong as a congregation in our worship.  You KNOW that we followed all the safety measures that had been recommend by the CDC, our state and our city health officials.  Thank you for complying with this in the past.

I do not believe that our little church contributed to the spread of this virus, but we don't want to "rock the boat".   The State governor and the mayor have requested (almost ordered, but not quite) that we close our doors to public worship (again).

The stats for COVID-19 have spiked.  As soon as the city of Los Angeles gets the numbers down again we will reopen for public worship while maintaining the COVID-19 safety protocols that are outlined below.

It has truly been a joy, a pleasure and a blessing to prepare the online-worship pages for you and your little ones, which we will continue to do throughout this time.

We want to remind you, that The Church is NOT our building (as you know), so really the The Church has never closed, (Matthew 16:17-18).

We thank all of you who have maintained Christlike characteristics throughout this time.  Many have reached out and offered love and assistance to those in and outside of The Church and continue to do so.

This page will serve as an updated source of information for you to keep you informed about our building reopening process and procedures.

    We Re-Opened for Church Services
    on Sunday, May 31, 2020

and then closed again, until governor/mayor orders differently

Steps we take at Highland Park Christian Church to help you worship in safety.

Again, we are closed again for public worship as of July 19, 2020.

When we get to reopen for worship, you do not need to feel obligated to return yet.

If you are in an "at risk" category, please stay home and take care of yourself.

We will miss and pray for you, but your health is of paramount importance.

Additionally, we will record and upload the message to this site after the service for those that cannot join us yet.

Please take time to read the following...
As we still need to be responsible and vigilant during this time when reopen.

Face masks are required for entry

Please bring your own face mask that covers your nose and your mouth.

    Hymnals have been removed

Hymnals have been removed from the seats. We will worship with the lyrics on screen.  We WILL sing while donning our face masks.

    NO children's Sunday School

We love children and would love to have you bring them to worship with us, but unfortunately, at this time we cannot accommodate children's Sunday School.

    Social Distancing guidelines are applied

We have taped off every other row to keep that 6' distance and request that family groups stick together.

This means smaller gatherings, if we need to do a second service, then we will.  You may be asked to return later.

    Social Distance Estimates

    Hand sanitizer is now available

Bottle of hand sanitizer is available near the entryway of the church.  (But you are welcome to bring your own.)

We look forward to seeing you when we can reoopen and will keep you informed.

If you are able to join us, please come on by.  We will welcome you from a distance with an "air-hug";  that is a wave!.. But rest assured, we will be smiling under our masks and would love for you to join us if possible.

2020-05-24-Sunday School and Worship-Memorial Day Sunday

What does REAL love look like?

Sacrificing yourself for the good of others.

This weekend's worship and message is about the sacrificial love that has been displayed by heroes on the battlefields of war, medicine, ideas, philosophy and of course, the spiritual realm.

Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.

As we prepare to worship online,
    let's open our hearts,
our eyes and our minds to what God wants to share with us this week in worship songs and His word.

Memorial Day is day to reflect and be grateful for the freedoms we enjoy
because of those men and women that gave their last full measure of devotion.

GOOD NEWS - We will probably be opening up the church building with actual, live services next week -
of course we will follow the social distancing and hygienic guidelines to keep everyone as safe as possible.  Thank you for sticking with us during this time.

Memorial Day Message of Sacrifice and Love

    May 16, 2020

2020-05-17-Sunday School and Worship-Would a Loving God REALLY Send People to Hell?

Big question today, and one that EVERY Christian must answer to the unbeliever when they are making a case for Christ.

Would a LOVING God REALLY send people to hell?

Jesus encourages us about God's love in Matthew 10:28-31, and tells us that as His disciples, we do not have to worry about being destroyed (punished) in hell.

Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.  Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.

    J. Warner Wallace's Book - God's Crime Scene

This is one of Pastor Harvey's favorite books!
And he keeps it on his Kindle to refer to it often.
It examines the case for the God of the Bible.
    J. Warner Wallace treats the universe as a crime scene and looks for a "Divine Intruder" - (weird name to call God, right?)

Check it out and be prepared to answer questions from non-believers.

    2020-05-10-Sunday School and Worship-Mothers’ Day

Moms come in all shapes, sizes and personalities...but one thing I think most people can agree on, MOST (not all, but MOST) mothers truly love their children and would do just about anything for them.

So today we celebrate all mothers with an excerpt from the book of Ruth.

Give your mom a call today if she is still on terra firma.  If your mother no longer is here on earth, pray for someone you know is a mother.

"Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

We hope all are doing well, staying safe and loving Jesus (of course).

How did that challenge go last week?
    Do you remember?
We asked you to SHOW the LOVE of God to someone.

Let's try it again this week.

As we prepare to worship online,
    let's open our hearts,
our eyes and our minds to what God wants to share with us this week in worship songs and His word,

let's think about HOW we can tangibly share God's love...
especially with those OUTSIDE of His church now.

Let them know that God's church and God Himself cares and loves them!

In the comments below this page, how about SHARING how YOU will show God's love THIS week!

but remember that The Church is NOT a spectator sport.

As you worship (with those in your "social circle") remember...

    God loves YOU!
    Jesus died for YOU!
Pastors Harvey and Denise are praying for YOU during this time...

This week's message we continue  with the Sermon Series, Tough Questions: Christian Answers.

Please comment below, let's fill them up with words of encouragement to anyone who happens to "stumble" upon this post.

And Now It's Time to Worship Christ

Who Am I  - Casting Crowns

Our first song reminds us who we are in Christ.  And who Christ is to us.

Crowder reminds us where all of our hope should be residing.

All My Hope Is in Jesus - Crowder

A Mighty Fortress - Martin Luther

(see below the video for the lyrics to sing along with)

Sing along with David Wesley and his virtual choir.

    A Mighty Fortress

    A mighty Fortress is our God, A Bulwark never failing;
Our Helper He amid the flood Of mortal ills prevailing:
    For still our ancient foe Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
    2
    Did we in our own strength confide, Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, The Man of God’s own choosing:
    Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth His Name, From age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.
    3
    That word above all earthly powers, No thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours  Through Him who with us sideth:
    Let goods and kindred go, This mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still,
    His Kingdom is forever.

Again, Denise and I will be available for prayer.

2020-04-26-Sunday School and Worship-Is There a Spirit World?

As we write the finishing touches on this weeks on-line services, we are still practicing "social distancing", during these bizarre times.

Another week goes by and still, the church BUILDINGS are not open.

But as Christians, we need to remember that a BUILDING is NOT the church.

The church is the family of brothers and sisters that trust in the Lord Jesus for their salvation.

So, be Christ's church this week.

Even if you cannot visit in person, call someone you know; encourage them AND pray together with them over the phone.

SHOW the Love of God to someone THIS week.

"Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
                                                                                          1 John 4:7-8

    A Better Covenant - Hebrews 8:1-13

Children's Sunday School by Mrs. Denise
    Jesus is Always With Us

    All right!
Time for the kiddos and Kiddos at heart to hear about the Good News and pray and sing to God!

    Take it away Mrs. Denise...

COVID-19 still will NOT keep us from praising God, praying for our brothers and sisters, and helping each other as best as we can.

Have a family worship time and remember...

    God loves YOU!
    Jesus died for YOU!
Denise and I are praying for YOU during this time...

This week's message will bring us back to the Sermon Series, Tough Questions: Christian Answers.

We'd love to hear from you!

And Now It's Time to Worship Christ

Ten Thousand Angels - Billy Gaines

A beautiful, solo version of this song.

...and for those of us that want to hear a bluegrass version, check out Jill Mason and Heartland band's version.

..this is the same song as above...but wow, Jill can sing!

Ten Thousand Angels - Jill Mason and Heartland

Sixteen Cities has a nice, modern worship song below

Greater is He - Sixteen Cities

The Gaithers had a gathering of many recording artists and did a live version of their song, "Greater Is He That Is in Me".

The video shows us what women's hair used to look like!

(But it's a great song and the lyrics ring true today, still!

Greater Is He That Is in Me [Live]

Wayne Hilliard, Ann Downing, Joy Gardner

Here is a cute, fast, great reminder to focus on others and help them, out of you love for people during this time.

2020-04-19-Sunday School and Worship-The Eyewitness of Thomas

    Hello!

    Easter is over.
    Christ is risen.  (still)

    But some still don't believe.
Well worship today with your family and BELIEVE!

"I know that He is living whatever men may say..."

    Yes,

"Because He lives, I CAN face tomorrow

Your know, those are pretty good words, you find them in the Bible, but they certainly express the Truth of Christ and His resurrection.

After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.”

Then He said to Thomas, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.”

Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
                                                                                          John 20:26-28

Adult Sunday School - Albert Faust - The Road to Emmaus
    Luke 24:13-29

Children's Sunday School by Mrs. Denise - Jesus and Thomas

Gather the family and listen and/or sing to the following joyful songs!
We still miss seeing you in church.

COVID-19 still will NOT keep us from praising God, praying for our brothers and sisters, and helping each other as best as we can.

Denise and I are praying for you during this time, and we are available for private prayer.
Give either of us a call.
Our numbers are listed below this post.

Please feel free to use the "comments" section below.
We'd love to hear from you!

The Thomas Song - Ken Young

Ken Young and the HALLAL singers do a great job telling us this amazing story.

This next song shows the Christian joy experienced in Christ crosses all racial and language barriers.  Part of the song is in Chinese (I don't know if it's Mandarin or Cantonese - but God does)...

Because He Lives - Arlington Chinese Church Virtual Choir

This is not the familiar "He Lives" song that we all know and love, but a different song completely.
(Don't worry though, we do have the original "He Lives" just below this video. )

Now enjoy (and sing along with) a song by "America's Worship Leader", Chris Tomlin.

    He Lives - Chris Tomlin

And now the the song the almost every believer knows and loves..."He Lives"

    He Lives - acappella version

For those who like a "country" version (and twang) here is Alan Jackson's version

He Lives - sung by Alan Jackson
